What Is a Diet?

How To Choose the Best Diet

We are all on a diet, all the time. Many of my friends are on what we jokingly call the ‘See Food’ diet; they see food and they eat it. Diets are largely cultural. Americans are on the standard American diet (with the apt acronym SAD). Japanese eat a diet rich in seafood protein, fermented foods and fibrous vegetables, and live longer than anyone else. Indians are on what I call the rice (or chapathi) and curry diet. Most of us have a fixed notion of what we definitely do not eat. Indians are mostly either vegetarians who eat dairy, or non-vegetarians who eat chicken, goat and fish.

My goal is to completely alter this mindset. Your body is your temple, and the food you eat is the offering you are making to it. I want you to enjoy the most varied and nutritious and tasty meals that you can find. The only issue is that you must restrict consumption of a few foods to once a week or so. The key to a good diet is to stay positive. In other words, think not so much about what you should not eat, but what you can eat.

How To Choose the Best Diet. I walked into a restaurant recently, a bit late, and found my colleague had already ordered a vegetarian club sandwich with French fries. Now this colleague is young, a bit full-figured, and believes that because she is a vegetarian, she eats healthy. The food that arrived was anything but healthy, and she expected me to share her meal. I did. I expertly unpacked my half of the club sandwich, discarded the bread, and ate the vegetables. French fries are basically not food, and I lost my craving for them a long time ago (you will too, after about six months of changing your approach to food). While my colleague ate her half of the club sandwich and all the fries, I only ate what I considered to be edible, which was the vegetables in a delicious mayonnaise sauce. I then ordered a burger on a half bun, and ate it with ketchup and mayonnaise.

I realize that it takes a lot of time and effort for most people to get to a point where they can see a plate of freshly prepared French fries and not eat them (or maybe eat one or two). That’s okay. I achieved this goal by eating more and more of the right foods and less and less of the wrong foods over time, until my body adjusted and my cravings naturally diminished. That really is all there is to it, but it takes time and patience.

Why Most Diets Fail

How To Choose the Best Diet. Have you ever seen a baby elephant that deliberately goes hungry or goes on a diet? There is a simple reason why most diets fail – hungerPeople get hungry when they are dieting, and that hunger eventually becomes a raging fire inside their minds which they have to put out with sweets or savoury snacks. Hunger is a primal emotion. People who are hungry are angry, and their stress hormones are higher. The Baby Elephant Diet does not involve hunger, or at least hunger beyond the first three weeks of detoxifying your body from the poisons that you have been ingesting all this time.

How To Choose the Best Diet. In fact, I tell you to actually increase the amount of food you eat, in order to get lighter and fitter. Is it possible that the quantity of food you eat is much less important than the quality of it, in terms of its impact on the body? Yes, it most certainly is. If you feel that what I am saying is counter-intuitive, then I want you to do a small experiment. Go to the nearest balcony or terrace this evening with a glass of red wine (or a salted lime soda if you don’t drink alcohol), sit in a comfortable place, look up at the setting sun and contemplate your life thus far. Look at the sun, and you will see a most counter-intuitive thing. The sun will clearly move across the horizon and disappear beneath it. In reality, the sun does not revolve around the earth, and it is the earth rotating on its own axis that gives you that illusion. Fully 26 per cent of Americans, in a recent study, said they believed the sun goes around the earth. I am sure many other people around the world would give the same response if the survey were held in other countries.

How To Choose the Best Diet. This book will break many of your so-called dietary beliefs and ideas along the way and cut through all the bad advice that you have been fed so far, both figuratively and literally. I will prove through the weight of science that eating right is not blindly following your parents’ diet, or following the marketing jargon of the sugar and processed food industry, or getting seduced by junk processed food masquerading as ‘taste bhi aur health bhi’. One of the most successful social programmes in India is the school midday meal programme run by the Akshaya Patra Foundation, which feeds about thirty lakh children daily.

The children can have as many servings as they like. Akshaya Patra, which I am familiar with because my wife Kavitha was its first executive director in the UK and helped to develop the donor network there, has sound knowledge about nutrition and children. It knows that children are more attentive in school, and their learning, retention, memory and test scores improve if they are provided a free lunch. Hungry kids are angry kids, and angry kids are not interested in learning.

How To Choose the Best Diet. The point is that it does not take much to improve our nutrition and make the shift to good health. Most of us actually have a problem of plenty—we have too much food to eat, but of the wrong kind, so we become unhealthy and unfit. My aim is to bring you back to basics. Start with eating simple basic food, eliminate junk food from your diet, and you will go from a Jupiter-like girth to Venus-like svelteness in no time at all. Next, I want to reorient your taste buds so that you develop an appreciation for healthy food, enjoy what you eat and eat only what you enjoy. I want your relationship with food to change. Instead of food being superficially comforting but hugely damaging to you, I want it to be healthy and nourishing.

How To Choose the Best Diet. If you are looking for an austere, severe, punishment-style diet, you are reading the wrong book. Have you ever met a baby elephant that starves itself? I certainly haven’t. On the Baby Elephant Diet, you can eat pretty much whenever you like (except late at night). You can eat as much food as you like, as long as it is the right kind of food. This is why it succeeds where most diets fail. You get to eat when you want, as much as you want. You get to be in control of your body and mind, and retain the choice to eat bad foods once in a while. You won’t end up with cravings, and you won’t end up messing up your food habits.
